The Atelier/Art Studio was designed to offer children and teachers a space to extend and support projects and experiences in the classroom, and to explore and combine many types of materials, tools, and techniques.
Our Atelier at Aspirations supports many experiences and ongoing projects that invigorate the lives of the children and teachers. We have learned to slow down and let events and situations influence how spaces, including the studio are used. When children live in a space, they own, feel, and find their place within it. Connections that take place between time and space happen through the rhythms of everyday life, connections to past events, and new experiences that reach toward the future. We aim to inhabit our spaces in ways that focus on variations and differences inside of our routines, rather then automatically repeating them. The children and the adults create the Atelier anew with each experience as we find the meaning of this place together.

Atelierista ~ Dee Murphy
Dee is excited to be in her role as the
Atelierista at Aspirations. Art
has always been a passion of hers, and at a young age she also realized she
loved teaching. She attended the
University of California, Davis and graduated with a BA in Studio Art and a
minor Education and Art History. Studio Art gave Dee a curiosity and confidence working with
many different mediums. After
internships at both high schools and elementary schools, she began teaching
preschool in 2006 and immediately fell in love with the excitement and
wonderment young children possess. Dee believes art is much more than painting
and drawing, and even though art often yields beautiful results, sometimes it
doesn't. Sometimes, art is in the
process. Dee has been a member of the California
Early Childhood Education Mentor Program for over 7 years and has helped train
educators in the field. She is an
artist that enjoys doing portrait work, and has sold art in Palm Springs, Baja
California and throughout San Diego. She now spends the majority of her time teaching, but stills paints and
does ceramics in her free time.
Dee has hiked Mt. Whitney twice with her sister. She and her husband Patrick live in Encinitas with their little guy Liam, who was born in 2019 and their daughter Kira who was born in 2022.
